Blog Entry 12 of 31 John's blog about EVERYTHING
This is a weekly (or more frequent) blog about what I feel like talking about. Hopefully it's local, but anything is better than nother.

New Year's wish list for the Mountain West
Contributed by: John Eisel   on 1/3/2007

Christmas has passed, but I figure there's no time like the present to throw out some New Year's Eve wish lists for the schools in the Mountain West Conference.

Now, in alpabetical order:
Air Force - More teams that are willing to face the Falcons on the basketball court.

Brigham Young - A couple of plays back against Arizona and Boston College would have been nice. People would have been talking about having two non-big six schools in the BCS games instead of the Cougars' thrashing of fashionably-challenged Oregon.

Colorado State - Imagine what a difference this season would have been if Kyle Bell hadn't blown out his knee before the season started. The Rams need Bell back at 100 percent - but coming back from a torn ACL can be hit and miss at best.

New Mexico - A home bowl game so they don't get left out during bowl season. Oh, wait a minute...

San Diego State - Marcus Slaughter to come back and say he was just kidding about leaving for the NBA Draft, where Slaughter wasn't drafted. The Aztecs would have started in the Top 25 with him to start the season. An on-campus football stadium would be nice, but let's not hold our breath.

TCU - More pub in Texas. They've been the second-best college team in Texas over the past few years. I know Fort Worth has its share of teams, but c'mon.

UNLV - Their basketball success so far this season to continue. UNLV is a basketball school, with football and baseball seasons just as a filler in between seasons. They have a great arena with a proven coach in a marquee area. There's no reason the team shouldn't be where they are right now.

Utah - Rick Majerus back. Then again, Majerus didn't really leave the cupboard stocked when he left town a few years back, besides Andrew Bogut.

Wyoming - More than 20,000 people showing up at football games. This is more demographics and geography than fan passion or team success. Most people just don't want to drive three hours or more back and forth to possibly watch a team in the cold.

And finally...
The Mountain West Conference - Damn, where do we start?
1. T he Mtn. on Dish Network and Direct TV. That would add validity to the station and make the conference's gamble to leave ESPN look really smart.
2. Better bowl matchups. My big gripe is with the champion facing the No. 5 Pac-10 team in the Las Vegas Bowl. It's unbecoming of the conference. An automatic spot in the BCS would be nice, but so would a dome in Laramie.
