Top 25 things I'd change in sports:
- The Utah Jazz and New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets would change mascots. This is so obvious, I don't know where to begin.
- Uniform changes:
Also, if your colors don't include black, don't put it in your uniforms. This includes you, New York Mets, Duke Blue Devils and Colorado State men's basketball team. A
- Professional teams must pay for at least 50% of their new stadium/arena/dome/athletic center/camode. I think the pro athletes will survive if they don't get as much money. It would also be good PR for the different pro leagues, who could usually use it.
- NFL overtime goes to the college style. The only thing I'd change is that you'd have to go for the 2-point conversion on the second possession and onward.
- NFL defensive pass interference goes to 15-yards, automatic first down. It cheapens the game when an accidental bump changes the course of a game.
- College football has an early signing period. High school kids who know where they want to go should be able to concentrate on school and not worry about being hounded by people and coaches. They should be able to sign their letter of intent between Aug. 15 and 31. They can concentrate on school and it would also stave off some gray hairs for college coaches.
- NCAA infractions should follow coaches. It's not fair for some coach to break the rules and then high-tail it out of there before the ax falls, leaving the fans, players and program to suffer. It may hurt some coaches from getting jobs, but if they were doing their job in the first place, there would be no problem.
- Limit bowl games to 28.Right now, there's 32 bowl games. There's 119 teams in Division I-A. With 28 bowl games, that means 56 teams get to go to a bowl game - 47 percent. I think that's just fine, and prevents games between MAC teams and Sun Belt teams in bowl games.
- Limit the NFL preseason to three games. Most of the games are meant just to find out who will make the team. The actual starters may - MAY only play in two of the current four games of preseason play. Why not cut out one of the games now? Because coaches need the extra reps to see who their fifth wide receiver will be? No - it's so owners can charge 50 bucks a pop for fans to watch the third and fourth quarterbacks battle for a roster spot.
- The NHL needs to get rid of the unbalanced schedule. "Hey honey - the Avs are playing tonight." "Who are they playing?" "Calgary." "Haven't they already played Calgary?" "Yes, seven times, including three times last month."
- A salary cap - and limit - for Major League Baseball. The Yankees shouldn't have a payroll over $250 million and the Florida Marlins shouldn't have one for under $15 million, sorry.
- Every football field should be ripped up and turf put in. Before someone starts whining about the 'sanctity' of the game - remember that teams aren't lining up in leather helmets anymore. The turf they have now is easier on the legs and bodies than grass, doesn't torn up, so it always looks great - and it saves a ton of water every year. This might not be important in say - Seattle, but in naturally dry areas, the more water you can save, the better.
- Let Pete Rose in the Baseball Hall of Fame. He's the all-time hits leader in Major League Baseball. Do I care that he bet on baseball? No. If baseball only let in choir boys, Ty Cobb certainly wouldn't be in the Hall and I'm sure there's plenty of other lousy human beings in the hall, too.
- There needs to be moratorium on singular mascots. That includes the Colorado Avalanche, Rocky Mountain Rage, and just about every team in the WNBA. It's like having black in your uniforms - it's all right for the first few teams to do it. Then it gets tired. Quickly.
- Get Louisiana Tech out of the
Western Athletic Conference. It just doesn't make sense. My recommendation would be either Conference USA or the Sun Belt. In a related topic, get the
University of Denver out of the Sun Belt Conference. Preferably, they go to the West Coast Conference. (They can't straight up switch because DU doesn't have football.)
- Which team gets home field advantage in Major League Baseball goes to the team with the best record, not who wins the All-Star Game. It works for just about every other professional sports league in existence, why not MLB? Tying it to the All-Star Game is contrived and tries to add importance to a game that really isn't that important.
- Get the mtn. on Dish Network or DirectTV. This is a purely selfish thing to change.
Check out here if you don't know what I'm talking about.
- NHL players must wear masks to cover their face. It doesn't really help the league's cause when you're watching a newcast and during hockey hilights the announcer says, "This may be too traumatic for some viewers."
- First round series in basketball and hockey go to five games.People may say by having seven games, there's a better chance of the 'better' team winning. That's exactly why I want five games: it increases the chances of a major upset or it prevents us having to sit through four blowouts. Another bonus is that it shortens the season, so hockey doesn't go into June and basketball into July.
- Three strikes and you're out rule for every league.I love that the NFL Players Association proposed this. Every professional league (I'm looking at you, NBA) should have that rule.
- Bowl game money is split more evenly. Right now, bowl games pay out approximately $246 million. Take half of that right off the top and divide that up amongst every Division-I college football team in the nation. That's $1 million per program, which can make a huge difference at some schools. The rest of the money is divided up in accordance with the payouts for the particular bowls. So, the BCS conference still get to keep most of the money because they have the automatic spots in the BCS bowl games. But in the long run, it helps even out the playing field among BCS and non-BCS teams. Some may say the BCS schools should keep most of the money since they have the better teams, but I'm wondering what would happen if the financial landscape was a little more even?

- Division champions in the NBA get a top-three seed. I'm sorry the Denver Nuggets were lousy division champions last year. But that's not enough to make a rush judgment and say the division champ is only guaranteed a top four seed. It kind of negates the benefit of winning a division.
- Title IX works both ways. Girls get to play football? Great. More power to them. But when the guys want to join the gymnastics team, it should be a no-brainer done deal. But it's not.
- Automatic walks in baseball. I know that there's always that one in five million chance that the pitcher could hurl the ball over catcher's head, but is it really worth it to waste four minutes of our lives?
- Non-guaranteed contracts in pro sports. Ouch. Ooohh. Suddenly, Major League and NBA players are twitching in angst. Too bad. The NFL doesn't have guaranteed contracts, and look where it gets them - the best on-field product day after day of any of the major sports and the unquestioned top spot as the best sports league in North America. Suddenly, we don't have career years in contract years, followed by three years of mediocrity until the next contract year comes up.
Do you like what John has to say? Do you think he's extremely naive? Possibly a moron?
Let us know.
