Blog Entry 13 of 31 John's blog about EVERYTHING
This is a weekly (or more frequent) blog about what I feel like talking about. Hopefully it's local, but anything is better than nother.

NHL needs to rework the schedule.
Contributed by: John Eisel   on 1/10/2007

I'm an endangered species like the Preble's jumping mouse, or maybe just a freak occurance like Boise State's Statue of Liberty play.

I'm a Coloradoan who's favorite hockey team is the New York Islanders. (If you don't know about the Islanders, just click on the link.) (And no, I don't mean the New York Rangers.)

Before the start of the current hockey season, I was really excited that I'd get to see my team play live at the Pepsi Center against the Colorado Avalanche. I've missed out on the Islanders in past seasons either because I've been out of the state, or because the Islanders just weren't scheduled to play in Denver that year.

Unfortunately, the NHL decided it would be a good idea for division rivals to play each other a lot to boost up fan interest after the year-long strike. This is why the Avs play Edmonton, Calgary and Minnesota 15 times a season.

And that just leaves East Coast hockey fans in Denver SOL.

I understand where the NHL was coming from - hockey fans are more interested in rival teams facing eachother. It fills up arenas and increases television viewing.

But people do get tired of seeing the same teams over and over and the schedule alienates regional hockey transplants who care only about their team.

If the Avs win, great. If they don't, oh well. I have my team that I care about and that's enough. I'm not a big enough hockey fan to shell out $30 to watch two teams I don't really care about, let alone to watch on telelvision for free.

I haven't been to an Avs game in years - and that was when they played the Avalanche. (There were about 50 Isles fans in the stands that night. You could tell because we all stood up when New York scored its only goal.)

I don't need, nor expect, to have the Islanders show up in Denver every season.

Every other season? I don't think that's too much to ask.
