CCA Teaches Military Spouses Computer Skills

(Aurora, CO) -- Buckley Air Force Base and the Community College of Aurora (CCA) have come together through Buckley's Spouse Employment Program, which teaches computer skills to spouses of personnel who have been deployed overseas.

CCA Adjunct Computer Information Systems Instructor Marcie Sosebee said the eight women she teaches at Buckley AFB are dedicated to the program and see what they are learning as an essential skill for the job market and furthering their higher education.

"This is a huge confidence builder," Sosebee said. "It's a perfect way for them to transition back into school and the workplace."

The courses teach beginning and advanced computer applications skills. Students learn Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point software programs. The program takes 12 combined weekends to complete and each student earns eight college credits for both the beginning and advanced courses.

The students can be tutored on Mondays at CCA's CentreTech Campus, which is close to the base.

Sosebee said this program is building a great relationship between Buckley, CCA, and the community.

"A few are actually taking courses at CCA and others are looking at going back to school and changing their career paths," Sosebee said. "CCA is a great springboard into the future."

Another advantage of the program for these spouses is the opportunity for them to socialize and make new friends with common interests. Since many of them are from other places they might not have friends or family nearby.

Sosebee said her students came in with a positive mindset. Two students want to go into nursing and another wants to become an elementary school teacher.

"I'm honored to be part of this program and feel blessed to have such great students," Sosebee said. "I'm happy to be a part of helping them move forward in their careers and education."

Department of the Air Force Community Readiness Consultant Olivia Pierce said the Spouse Employment Program has been such a success they are a submitting a proposal to continue the program next year.

"The partnership with CCA couldn't be better," Pierce said. "They're the greatest people you'll ever meet and could work with. They were just awesome."
