Marshall Takes Reigns as CCA’s Facilities Director
Contributed by: Tracy Williams on 8/20/2007

(Aurora, CO) -- Imagine the skill and attention to detail it takes to move 1,500 employees into 15 stories of a one million square foot office building in downtown Denver.

That type of talent is what Jim Marshall, CCA's new Director of Facilities, brings to the college. Marshall started his new position at the college on July 30.

"That was the largest project I've ever worked on," said Marshall.

The project was, at the time, downtown Denver's most ambitious development for the United Bank of Denver (which is now the Wells Fargo building). The project was constructed in 1980 to symbolize the financial industry, and is now the well recognized "cash register building" that is such an integral part of downtown Denver's skyline.

"We were handling three moves a week, which involved scheduling, furniture organization and placement, interior design, and moving employees around among other things," he said.

That experience ultimately led Marshall, to CCA, where he takes care of the needs of CCA staff, faculty, students and visitors.

There were stops along the way, however. Over the last two decades, Marshall took his organizational skills to TCI, US Sprint, his own company, Bonfils Blood Center, and the Crispin Porter and Bogusky advertising agency, where he was the facilities director for all three of the company's sites.

As he settles into his new role at CCA, Marshall is looking forward to "taking care of the needs of CCA's employees and maintaining a clean, healthy and safe work environment."

As part of that effort, Marshall oversees CCA's mailroom, custodial staff, the grounds, HVAC technicians and electricians.

"CCA is a different kind of space," Marshall said. "We do so much of our own maintenance work, which is different from a lot of places. Our approach helps with efficiency and costs."

He also appreciates the staff that he works work day in and day out.

"The people here are wonderful," he said. "They're helpful, knowledgeable and independent. They're a pleasure to work with and make my job even more enjoyable."

Marshall's immediate tasks include tackling CCA's internal and external signage needs, working with the Lowry Redevelopment Authority as they prepare to tear down several Lowry structures and CCA reconfigures it's office needs there, and installing a small observatory west of CCA's Fine Arts building.

In the 20+ years that Marshall has been in the facilities maintenance industry, his most important lesson was giving lots of attention to detail.

"A former boss told me years ago that when you're moving people around, they generally don't like it," Marshall said. "So, if you can make their transition as seamless as possible, you can almost always keep them happy, which requires lots of follow up to make sure that everything is in place and working properly when they get to their new space. That advice has served me well over the years."

And it will now serve CCA well, too.
