The new Montbello High School will help freshmen make the leap to high school this year with a special 9th grade registration on Thursday, July 27 and a 9th grade academy starting on Monday, July 31. (School starts for all students on Tuesday, Aug. 22.)
The goal is to help freshmen get off to a good start - easing them into the demands of high school by working with them in smaller settings and offering more individual attention.
Freshman registration is from 7:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Thursday, July 27 in the Counselor's Office at Montbello High School, 5000 Crown Blvd.
The first-ever 9th grade academy is from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. weekdays from Monday, July 31 through Wednesday, Aug. 9. Students will experience leadership training, find ways to be involved in their school and our community, and learn skills for success in high school, such as note-taking, organization and test-taking strategies. Every freshman will have a teacher mentor and an individualized academic plan.
Unveiling a new academic program and culture, Montbello is moving from a large traditional high school to a school with three unique learning communities - a 9th grade academy, early college scholars magnet and technology innovations magnet.
"I owe a great thank-you to the many community leaders, parents and staff who have helped revitalize their neighborhood high school to help every student succeed," said
principal Antwan Wilson.
