Montbello girls top Brighton
Contributed by: John Eisel/YourHub.com on 2/24/2006

LITTLETON -- Nothing in life is free -- including free throws.

After a season of struggling from the free throw line, the Montbello girls basketball team pulled together to hit 14 of 23 from the charity stripe, just enough to give then a 71-68 win over Brighton in the first round of the Class 5A basketball tournament on Feb. 23 at Heritage High School.

"I'm most proud of our free throws," Montbello coach De'Edra Dangerfield said after the game. "We've been awful all year."

The Denver Prep League runner-up Warriors (16-8) capitalized on the Bulldogs' youth, forcing costly turnovers down the stretch.

The 10-seed Bulldogs (15-8) had their chances down the stretch to topple the Warriors (16-8), but costly turnovers, which Brighton coach Ed Basquez said was caused by the team's inexperience.

The Bulldogs couldn't get a possible tying 3-pointer off in the final seconds, as Warrior sophomore Danielle Brown intercepted a pass at the top of the 3-point circle to run out the clock.

"You could tell going into the fourth quarter we didn't have the experience," Brighton coach Ed Basquez said of his team, which was led by juniors and underclassmen.

Brown led all scorers with 25 points.

"We couldn't stop No. 22 (Brown)," Basquez said.

Dangerfield said the close game will help the Warriors as they play host and No. 2 seed Heritage (17-6) on Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m.

"We know we can keep our composure and win close games," Dangerfield said.

The game was close throughout, as the biggest lead never reached 10 points.

Montbello led 43-41 at halftime as the Warriors' fast break and offensive rebounding held the slight edge over Brighton's hot start from the field, as they made nearly two thirds of their shots in the first half.

Basquez said both teams had confidence they could score, no matter what the other team did, so they focused on defense in the second half.

The points dropped nearly in half while the fouls - and physical play increased in the second half.

Junior Lindsee Bachicha and freshman Ashley Lliteras led Brighton with 19 points each.

The Montbello Warrior's girls basketball team has always fought hard to advance to the level of chanpions. I applauded them for their wonderful effort to survive and win and get the respect due them. Irene Burks Montbello Booster Club
