Blog Entry 6 of 15 Things, news, whatnot
I'm Karen Ward Gilbert, a (former) community journalist here at YourHub.com. In this blog, I may (have written) about current events, the latest happenings at YourHub.com or blather ranging from what I overheard on the bus to my new favorite chocolate bar.

Grownups and their basements

Next month, I'm heading to Bend, Ore., to visit my parents for a few days. I haven't seen them since the holidays so it will be nice to spend some quality time with them and enjoy the spoils of my mothers' incredible dessert-making prowess.

Not to mention, Bend absolutely is one of the best places on Earth and I get there far too infrequently.

I got an e-mail from my mother yesterday and in addition to the usual weather report and an update as to what's happening in her garden, she asked, and I quote:

"When you come out in July will you bring a suitcase large enough to take your cabbage patch dolls home with you?"

Wow. What?

I have reached that point in adulthood. Mom and dad no longer want to play host to the relics of my past I have refused to "get rid of." (Why does the thought of parting with Gunther Bear cause my tummy to ache?)

I suppose now that I have a house of my own -- and a basement with ample storage space -- it's time for me to collect the various bits of my childhood I have stashed across the west in my family members' garages and storage units.

In addition to my two Cabbage Patch Kids (Odella Audrey and Claire Nina) I'm fairly certain a small army of Barbies -- whose hairdos have been seriously, unfortunately altered -- and who knows what else, await. Maybe some scrapbooks? Boxes of old notes? Yikes.

Actually, this all began last summer. My brother moved into a new home and shortly thereafter presented me with a taped cardboard box labeled "Karen's Archives."

In it, I found Brownie and Girl Scout uniforms, two prom dresses (none of which still fit) and an oversized, wool Hard Rock Cafe jacket with purple leather sleeves (this fits.) It is hideous, obviously. But in seventh grade, I was the coolest girl in Wyoming with that thing.

The box now sits in my basement. Awaiting the company of my other soon-to-be acquired crap.

In the scheme of my growing up, is this purely a ceremonial exercise for my parents? What do they have planned for their newfound extra space? Do they really need it? Or, is this just a rite of passage all Ward children must endure? I'll have to check in with my sister and two brothers.

To be honest, I'm a little apprehensive. I'm looking forward to seeing the mohawk I gave Super Curls Perm Barbie, or whatever she was called, but it's wierd thinking she's coming to live with me.

Annie, I suspect the dolls will love living in L.A. with you. I once had a porcelain doll as well. (I broke her. Good thing too, because she scared me a bit.)

Several porcelain dolls just moved in with me in Los Angeles. My mother recently informed me that a) they cannot live at my parents' house and b) I cannot get rid of them. I wonder where they dolls would prefer to live?
