Blog Entry 13 of 15 Things, news, whatnot
I'm Karen Ward Gilbert, a (former) community journalist here at YourHub.com. In this blog, I may (have written) about current events, the latest happenings at YourHub.com or blather ranging from what I overheard on the bus to my new favorite chocolate bar.

Snow and a mouthful of candy = Fall
Contributed by: Karen Ward Gilbert/YourHub.com   on 10/16/2006

If you don't like the weather, blah blah blah ... Yes, it will change in five minutes. We know this. Especially in the mountains and especially in October.

Last weekend, Joe, Violet and I decided to bust outta the city for a bit and hit the trail. Nothing too strenuous, mind you, but some elevation in both altitude and heart rate was in order. (Not to mention hiking is a great way to wear out the dog.)

The sky was gray and the temperature was mild as we made our way west on I-70 to Keystone, near where we planned to check out the Chihuahua Gulch and Lake trail.

We passed one other human and canine as we began our trek. After that, it was just the three of us joined shortly by some lazy snowflakes. As we kept moving up the trail, the flakes got bigger. And a bit more wet. It was unexpected and awesome.

Naturally, we hadn't bothered to pack hats or gloves -- see, we needed the room for the early Halloween candy stash we brought along. Joe, as always, had rain gear in his backpack so that helped keep us mostly dry during the latter half of our hike.

We never made it to the lake. We decided after an hour or so on the trail, and about 20 minutes into the snow, we had better head back since we were ill prepared.

I popped a Jolly Rancher in my mouth (did you know these orginally were made in Golden?) snapped a few photos and smiled all the way back to the car.

Saturday confirmed in my mind the many reasons I love fall. These good things include, in no particular order:

A relatively empty I-70
Halloween candy
early snowfall
crunchy leaves underfoot
crisp air smelling of crunchy leaves
cold wet noses (of the dog variety, please)
hot buttered rum

I love 'Self-portrait in the snow.' Sounds like the title of a poem. It is also one of five fine photos in this fun blog.

I also love all those things about fall, minus the wet dog noses.
