The Town of Morrison has recently constructed a welcoming sign at the east entrance to its historic business district. The large stone sign was completed during the second week in June. It is located just to the east of Ozzie's Cider shop where Highway 8 splits into Bear Creek Avenue and Mt. Vernon Street.
Town staff indicate some additional work will be conducted during the summer to further enhance the entryway to Morrison. This will include moving an Xcel light pole, and doing additional grading and minor landscaping.
In recent years, the town and local businesses have invested in curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements, parking expansion, signage improvements in the historic business district, along with the development of the Bear Creek Trail and historical mural at Two Creeks Plaza in an effort to position the existing business district to remain competitive and special as development starts to occur in the Rooney Valley between Alameda and Morrison Road to the east of C470.
The Town is located on the Lariat Loop Historic and Scenic Byway, the closest Byway to the metro area which connects Morrison, Red Rocks Park, Evergreen, Bergen Park, the Buffalo Overlook at Genesee, Lookout Mountain, Buffalo Bill's grave and museum, and the City of Golden.
The development of entry signage is a goal established in the town's comprehensive plan update. The draft plan is expected to be adopted in the near future and calls for signage to be placed at several other entryways into the small foothills community.
Morrison was settled in the late 19th century, was incorporated in the early 20th Century, and is located south of Red Rocks, west of C470, at the mouth of Bear Creek Canyon.
The sign was constructed by the
Zuni Sign company in Evergreen and was fashioned from a large flagstone slab quarried in Lyons, Colorado.
