Applewood makes playtime special for disabled kids

Playtime seems so simple, but for children diagnosed with muscular dystrophy it can be a daily challenge. Those affected have a lack of muscle mass when they are born, which does not allow them the freedoms most have become accustomed. In Colorado, 500 people are diagnosed with muscular dystrophy each year.

Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric ( www.applewoodfixit.com) is proud to make Two Angels Foundation the final $1000 "Caring Community 12 in 12 Giveaway" of 2008. This will be the fourth year the company has donated $1000 a month to a local nonprofit organizations.

Applewood's donation will help fund activities such as horseback riding lessons and purchases supportive swings for children diagnosed with this disease. Because of Two Angels Foundation and Applewood Plumbing more families will have the opportunity to give their children the best chance at sharing the experiences of their peers.

"Many disabled children can miss out on playing outdoors like the other children but Two Angels Foundation is helping to change that," said John Ward, owner of Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric. "It is amazing to see that this Foundation has helped so many families in need."

The Two Angels Foundation was founded by Dawn and Rodger Mohatt in honor of their daughters Allyson and Rachel. The two girls both died before they were five from the rare form of muscular dystrophy called nemaline myopathy.

Since December, the Two Angels Foundation has raised $50,000 and given away more than 30 gifts to families. "It's a great way to turn our tragedy into something positive," said Dawn Mohatt, president of the Two Angels Foundation. "It helps us cope and also keeps the memory of our girls alive."

Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric has served the Denver/Boulder Metro area for more than 35 years. The company has consistently been rated one of the nation's top 10 service companies by their customers and is honored to have achieved the Nexstar Network Select Service Designation, the 2007 City of Golden Rotary Ethics in Business Award and named a finalist in the 2008 Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Marketplace Trust.
