Local engineering firm, Lockheed Martin, expects many of their 70,000 engineers to retire over the next 15 years and is now searching for new engineering talent in high schools around the country. The company has paired with Bear Creek High School through a new initiative, Project Lead the Way, to spark student interest in science, technology, engineering and math. The local company hopes to find and retain the engineering talent needed to succeed. The students and staff of Bear Creek are leading the way in producing qualified engineering students to enter the workplace after graduation. Bear Creek piloted the Project Lead the Way program in 2001 and now has four engineers on staff teaching pre-engineering classes. This year, Lockheed engineers will partner with students to mentor, tutor and assist with special projects. Students who complete the program are eligible for Lockheed Martin scholarships.
