Can Your Child Safely Escape a Fire?
Contributed by: Cindy Matthews on 5/9/2008

Does Your Child Know How To Safely Escape Your Home In A Fire? If not, you need to attend West Metro's Family Fire Muster on June 14 and give them the chance to learn the skills and practice escaping from a house filled with smoke!

The Family Fire Muster at Red Rocks Community College (13300 West 6th Ave.) in Lakewood is a FREE family event providing dozens of hands-on activities for you and your children to get active and have fun while learning to be safe!

In a life safety trailer filled with theatrical smoke, West Metro Fire Fighters teach children how to feel if doors are warm, signaling a fire on the other side. Then, they work with your child on finding a second way out of the house. As the bedroom fills with smoke, children practice the lesson of crawling low under the smoke where the air is good. Children will learn what a smoke alarm looks and sounds like and what they should do when the alarm goes off. They learn the importance of having a Safe Family Meeting Place and how to use their emergency exits by climbing out a "2nd floor" window and down a ladder to reconnect with their parents!

Other fun activities at the Family Fire Muster give kids the chance to REALLY dial 9-1-1 to practice emergencies and the information they need to know to get help fast! And, children get to crawl low under smoke and go in a speedy race against time to see who gets out of the smoke first.

Through these and many other fun events, your kids will become pros at fire and injury prevention! Invest in your family's safety and go to the West Metro Family Fire Muster on June 14,9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood. It's free! Bring your children, your friends, your sunscreen, and your excitement, but please don't bring your pets!

West Metro Fire Rescue's Family Fire Muster is brought to you by St. Anthony Central Hospital, along with help from Red Robin, Walmart, Foothills Credit Union, PBS, FOX 31 and YourHub.
