What in the world is a Celebrant?
Contributed by: Linda Lehman-Murphy on 1/15/2008

HeartSong is adding exciting new services! In addition to the coaching and retreats designed to help caregivers and others move ahead in their lives, HeartSong is offering Celebrant services. What's THAT?!

Celebrants are individuals who are specially trained and certified to design and perform personalized and meaningful ceremonies to honor life transitions.

In listening to and learning from caregivers, HeartSong founder Linda Lehman-Murphy discovered that many had no ceremony or ritual in their lives. Quite often the significant losses, the life changes, and the joys experienced by these caregivers were not honored publicly - there was no ceremony or celebration. Many had no connection to organizations in their lives that offered ceremony and ritual. So, how were they marking those important life transitions? They weren't.

Millions of people in America have no formal religious or spiritual affiliations. Where do we go for help in the times of loss, or in times of joy? Who can create ceremony when we get a job, lose a job, experience divorce or the death of someone close? Who can design and deliver ceremonies for marriage, to welcome a baby, to warm a house, to honor a hard working staff?

Celebrants write ceremonies uniquely suited to the situation and to the honorees. Members of this special profession design unique events that incorporate the honoree's life traditions. They write the ceremony and work with the client until they agree that it's just right. Celebrants rehearse and perform the ceremony, keeping the honorees as the central focus. And, finally, they present a written keepsake copy of the ceremony.

Linda Lehman-Murphy is a certified Celebrant - one of only two in Colorado. Celebrants worldwide have officiated at virtually every life event, including weddings and commitments, funerals and memorials, baby namings and welcomings, adoption ceremonies and coming of age celebrations for adolescents.
