On Tuesday, June 24th, during their weekly morning meeting at the Mountain Resource Center in Conifer, the Conifer Rotary Club presented their 2008 Ethics in Business Award to Jerry and Beth Schroppel of Big O Tires-Conifer. The presentation included an etched glass sculpture award, a framed award certificate, a year's honorary membership in the Conifer Rotary Club and 2 Conifer Rotary Club Ethics in Business Award embroidered denim shirts. When presenting the award, Ethics Committee member Mike Daniels commented that "Big O Tires-Conifer has supported almost all of our community's major events and nonprofit organizations since the store has been in business. Their willingness to assist clients as well as our community with alacrity is exemplary and is representative of the compassion, good will and leadership exhibited by the store's owners, Jerry and Beth Schroppel."
Each year the Conifer Rotary Club selects a local business whose management and staff has been recognized for practicing and adhering to business ethics that are in accord with Rotary's 4-Way Test. The 4-Way Test asks: Is it the Truth? (How does the business deal with its customers in a truthful and hones manner?), Is it Fair to All Concerned? (How does the business represent and warrant its products and services in an honest and ethical manner?),Will it be Beneficial to All Concerned? (How does the business' goods and services benefit the welfare of the community, its customers and employees?) and Will it Build Goodwill and Better Friendships? (How does the ownership, management and staff of the business participate in community functions and fulfill the public need?)
After nominations from club members were collected by the Ethics Committee, committee members then interviewed the various nominees to better understand how they conduct their business. After the nominees were interviewed the entire committee met again to discuss each of the nominees and voted on who should be the 2008 recipient of the award.
In addition to selecting the winner, this year the club's Ethics Committee decided to recognize several other area businesses who were nominated for the award and were ranked high by the committee. "Distinctive Nominees" were recognized with framed certificates. 2008 Distinctive Nominees for the Conifer Rotary Ethics in Business Award were Patty and Greg Dierksheide of Tatonka Farms, Paula Kamin of Copy Copy and Victoria Gibson of Raven's Restaurant.

It's hard for me to believe this story. Today, Jerry Schroppel, provided me the worst customer service experience of my life. This store has misleading or fraudulent information on their tire display and when questioned about it, instead of politely explaining that the policy had recently changed, Jerry proceeded to rip the sign off the tire display and yell at me. He is about as ethical as a snake.
