Record number voters turn out for West Metro Fire
Contributed by: Cindy Matthews on 5/4/2006

Voters in Jefferson and Douglas County voted to support both of West Metro Fire Rescue's revenue generating ballot initiatives when they visited the polls Tuesday, May 2.

The first question, 5A, increases West Metro's current mill levy of 11.382 by 1 mil, generating about 2.95 million a year for the fire district's general operating expenses.

The second question, 5B, gives West Metro permission to authorize $43 million in bonds to fund capitol projects, including a fire fighter training facility and replacing four fire stations.

More than 5,200 people cast their votes making this the largest voter turnout for a polling place election in West Metro's recent election history.

5A: Shall West Metro's mil levy be increased by 1 mil?
FOR 3,355
AGAINST: 1,683

5B: Shall West Metro be authorized to issue $43 million in bonds for capital projects?
FOR 3,190
AGAINST: 1,923

Supporters of the ballot initiatives cite the large number of absentee ballots returned as the primary reason for the large voter turnout in a May special district polling place election that typically sees very low voter turnout. 1,493 absentee ballots were issued and 1,257 were returned accounting for nearly 24% of the total vote.

West Metro expresses its gratitude to its citizenry for committing to keep our community and fire fighters safe from fire and injuries. Now, the real challenge begins as the third largest fire department in Colorado undertakes the tasks of hiring 24 new fire fighters, adding vital life saving equipment and apparatus, and modernizing its antiquated 911 dispatch center and fire stations.

Construction on the fire fighter training facility and remodeling of fire stations is set to begin in January 2007. The completion date for the training facility is first quarter 2008. Station 10 (south Lakewood) and Station 7 (east central Lakewood) will be torn down and rebuilt January 2007 - March 2008, followed by Station 8 (Jewell and Garrison in central Lakewood), Station 5 (Denver West / Applewood area); and Station 4 (Green Mountain area) phased in over the next three years.
