The rhythmic sound of chanting mingles with the sharp beat of drums as the Native American dancers file into the powwow arena. Clad in traditional dress, dancers of all ages move together in celebration. Feathers bob and shawls twirl as they showcase their heritage.
This was the scene that filled the valley below The Fort restaurant in Morrison on May 20 at the seventh annual Indian Market and Powwow. Dancers from tribes all over the southwest region dressed in traditional regalia for the powwow. Competition was held in categories such as Traditional, Shawl, Fancy, Grass and Jingle dancing.
The Indian Market featured 37 Native American artists displaying works such as pottery, jewelry, weavings, sculpture and paintings. In order to be accepted into the show, the artists must be affliated with a registered tribe and use natural and authentic materials.
The event was sponsored by the Tesoro Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims to create community based events and educational outreach programs to enrich and celebrate cultural heritage. (Tesoro means "Treasure" in Spanish.) All Tesoro events are inspired by Colorado's history and shared experiences with Southwest, Spanish, Mexican, Native American, African American and early European cultures.
