For the past 11 years Bandimere Speedway, through their Bandimere Family Foundation, has encouraged elementary-age children to develop a love for reading through a fun, race-themed incentive program called "Race to Read".
Started in 1995 at one Jeffco school, the program has grown to include 66 schools and nearly 28,000 children in 2006. During the six-week program which takes place in the spring, young readers are provided with take-home coloring sheets that are filled in each time they read a specified number of minutes.
Once the sheet is complete and a parent has verified the reading with a signature, the student returns the sheet to his/her school to claim a variety of prizes and a new reading sheet. Students that complete three sheets receive a ticket for themselves and one adult to Bandimere Speedway's season-opening event, the Checker Auto Parts "Night of Fire & Thunder".
There are also prizes for top readers and an opportunity for each participating school to send a staff representative to the popular "Race to Read Staff Challenge Race" where they race against each other in one of eight specially-prepared Z28 Camaros down the famous Bandimere Speedway quarter-mile!
Schools also have the opportunity to invite a "real racer" to come to their school with their race vehicle and talk to the students and sign autographs. Many local businesses and attractions provide valuable coupons as fun prizes for these eager readers.
Here are a couple ofquotes from some of our participants: "Doing Race to Read was really fun. It made me realize that reading is funner than it looks. If it was not for Race to Read, I would still not be wanting to read that much. Thank you for Race to Read." "I really liked participating in the Race to Read. It was fun.The prizes were awesome. I found good books and I felt proud of myself."
