Spend an hour driving the BMW 750i sedan and you'll know that this is a luxury sedan in the truest sense. This big sedan is so smooth that full days at the wheel never leave you tired. It's easy to drive the 7 Series well, even on winding mountain roads, and few luxury sedans can keep up with it at high speeds.
easured by its combination of acceleration, braking, handling and ride quality, it may be the best car in its class, which happens to include some of the best, most expensive cars in the world. The ultra-quiet interior is exceptionally comfortable, equipped with every gadget you can imagine.
The 7 Series is stuffed with the latest technology, including the automotive equivalent of infra-red night-vision goggles and advanced safety features that make it an electronically protected, rolling cocoon. Night Vision uses a thermal-imaging camera with Far Infra-Red technology that highlights sources of heat. The camera has a range of nearly 1,000 feet, and it displays a high-contrast image on the navigation screen when Night Vision is turned on. The system is intended to work like a rear-view mirror, with potential hazards jumping out in a quick scan.
A drive home up I-70 to Evergreen expressly to test Night Vision demonstrated the system's potential. The thermal-imaging camera picked up a truck's exhaust pipe almost as far ahead as its tiny taillights were visible. Had that exhaust been the body heat of a large Elk or deer, the driver would be aware of the animal long before it's visible to the naked eye.
The 750i ($86,990) is powered by a 4.8-liter V8 generating 360 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque. Standard features include what you would expect in this class, and then some. Voice activated GPS navigation, a four-year subscription to BMW Assist emergency communications, adaptive headlights that turn with the car, BMW's Park Distance Control and a climate-controlled console box come standard. The 10-speaker audio system has a single CD player and auxiliary jack, and the standard wheels are 18 inches in diameter.
The 4.8-liter V8 engine is a delight: quiet and unobtrusive in most situations, but ready and willing to play hard when asked. Combine the smooth drive train with the smooth ride and the 750i feels deceptively slow. When the road is clear, you might find yourself coming into corners carrying more speed than you realize, and getting on the brakes a little harder than originally planned as I did on I-70. This isn't automatically a scary thing, because the 7 Series demands a high degree of self control, because you can quickly find yourself having too much fun.
The BMW 7 Series is one of the finest luxury sedans in the world: remarkably smooth, quiet and roomy. Its interior is impeccably finished. It offers extraordinary handling with a magic carpet ride.
