Louis Vuitton. Prada. Gucci. Armani. The designer labels that rule society. Wal-Mart. Target. Consignment shops. Places to buy clothes for less. In this day and age, people seem obsessed with labels. If an article of clothing has the name of a famous fashion guru in microscopic letters, it is better than the clothing without.
Even if two shirts, or pairs of pants, or skirts look exactly alike, but one was hanging from the racks in Wal-Mart and the other was featured in the last issue of
Vogue
, the one from
Vogue
should be favored. After all, a designer label makes all the difference, right? Even though the clothes from Wal-Mart don't even cost a fraction of the price of the ones recommended by the hottest fashion magazines, the expensive clothes are so worth the money. Unfortunately, this is the mindset of many 21 st century Americans.
These people need to understand that the defining factor of a piece of clothing is not its label; it is rather the person wearing the clothes. As motivational speaker
Murray Banks
put it, "No one in the world needs a mink coat but a mink." According to English writer and actor Quentin Crisp too, "Fashion is what you adopt when you don't know what you are." People who have yet to discover their true identities let the mass media tell them what to think and how to dress, giving them the illusion that they will be viewed as cool.
Mark Twain
once said, "The finest clothing made is a person's skin, but, of
course, society demands something more than this." Facing society can be
an extremely difficult task because of the many negative reactions which can
be received. However, reality is, the average person spends more time worrying about how others will view him or her than placing judgments on other people.
Remember that line from the song featured in the movie
Annie
: "Who cares
what they're wearing, on Main Street or Saville Row; it's what you wear from
ear to ear, and not from head to toe that matters...You're never fully dressed
without a smile." It is what's on the inside that counts. A friendly and
compassionate person sporting the latest fashions from Wal-Mart will have
many more friends than the snobbish, rich person with a closet full of designer
clothes.
You don't need designer clothes to define you. Be the person you want to be.
Don't waste your money on an expensive article of clothing whose only
attribute is its label. Buy similar clothes at discount stores and use the money
you save to buy more important things- things that will have a larger and more
positive impact on you in the long run.
