Watching TV is a frivolous pastime
Contributed by: Hannah Smith on 5/28/2007

Hardly ever do I watch television.

Seldom do I go to the movies.

Why?

Let's just think.

Soap operas. Dancing With the Stars. The Simple Life. Judge Judy. Any one of the many shows on television, really.

Can you honestly tell me that any of these entertainment attempts has the least bit of substance?

In the past several years, the entertainment world has undergone a shift that I find highly displeasing. Not only do frivolous "reality TV" shows constantly air, everything else has become entirely corny- even the formerly good shows.

Maybe it's just me; maybe I'm the one that's changing. But somehow I just don't see how that can be the case.

I mean, I guess some people must enjoy entering that comforting world beyond the television screen, which I perceive to be considerably cheesier than Mouse Heaven. They must, seeing as so many seemingly pointless shows and movies have received rave reviews and have experienced overwhelming success.

But what if this isn't the case? What if people rather cling to the television out of habit and an unwillingness to leave their comfort zone? People have been relaxing in front of the tube for years- significantly prior to my birth. However, there are so many other meaningful activities to engage in.

Life is too short to spend in front of the TV day after day. Wouldn't it be more meaningful to do something productive? Learn something or try something new. Pick up a book, sign up for tennis lessons, go rock climbing, do anything that will prove fun and memorable.

I'm not suggesting cutting out TV and movies all together. I mean, I used to watch both quite frequently. And if some decent romantic comedies begin to hit the theatres again or if the shows on TV gain some substance, I will gladly watch them again. However, until then, I see avoiding these facets of the entertainment industry a wise alternative and I highly encourage others to do the same.

I don't want to regret how I spend my childhood and teenage years. I may not be able to afford a bunch of elaborate vacations and undertakings. But at least I can choose to put a worthwhile use to my time.
