"It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad," according to acclaimed author
C. S. Lewis
. Lewis remarked that, without change over the course of a lifetime, people essentially rot. Any kind of change has great potential to bring a whole lot of good upon the world by breaking up the familiar and allowing people to lead interesting lives.Granted, change can be a very scary thing. After being set in old ways for a long period of time, those ways become emblazoned within the mind. People think that if something 'ain't broke' too badly, it shouldn't be fixed. Change brings the possibility of conditions worsening to the point at which severe hardships are suffered. Therefore, living a changeless life is safe because lack of alteration means never having to adjust to unfamiliar practices. However, change is quite often linked to improvements. As German scientist,
Georg Christoph Lichtenberg
, put it, "I cannot say whether things will get better if we change; what I can say is that they must change if they are to get better."
Nothing is ever done perfectly; there is always room for improvement in every aspect of every lifestyle. Resisting change is equivalent to resisting the possibility of conditions becoming increasingly more favorable. What's more, living a life without change becomes incredibly boring and meaningless after a while. Why do the same things in the exact same ways every day for an entire lifetime? Couldn't there possibly be a more interesting alternative? Even doing little things such as opening up to new people can be the basis for a more exciting life.
Believe it or not, people learn from change. If changes bring negative results, at least we learn from our mistakes. If they bring positive results, we develop more ideas for continued change to better our lives even further. Never taking chances means never knowing which opportunities in life will carry success and happiness with them. Moreover, change keeps people happy. No one is honestly content being trapped in old ways forever. Change is synonymous with metamorphosis. A person who resists change will never fully evolve from caterpillar to butterfly. He or she will be stuck inside the chrysalis, away from everyone else and the pleasures of life. Change can be one of the most frightening obstacles a person is forced to face throughout his or her lifetime. However, all of us must be forced through it.
Author
Gail Sheehy
once said, "If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow we aren't really living." This is all too true. Change is the recipe for growth. Nobody can grow as a person without changing first. So, as changing times lead us down new paths; as summer vacation replaces the school year, as seniors move on to college, or as employees begin new jobs; remember to savor the change and await the treasures at the end of the road.
