Hunter Safety classes are available
Contributed by: Leonard Avery   on 3/15/2007

On January 1 1949 all hunters born after that time are required to attend and graduate from a certified Hunter Education course.

Luckily the Colorado hunters and sportsmen rose to the challenge and we now have over 200 Volunteer Hunter Education Instructors here in Colorado. A class can be found at almost every city and town Recreation Center, at sporting good stores, and some schools and churches. Classes are listed on the Division of Wildlife's web site found under the Dept. of Natural Resourses in the Colorado government site.

The fee for the entire course that can three to five evenings and a sometimes a full weekend long is only $10. This covers everything that the student needs. No guns are required as the Division of Wildlife provides them and proper safety glasses and hearing protection. If your family hunts or owns guns then all in the family should be taught the proper firearms safety.

The state laws require a minimum of 10 hrs of lecture and 10 rounds of live fire. A test will be given and must be passed with a minimum of 75%. However if the student is just taking the course as a refresher or just to learn about firearms safety they are welcome too. While courses are available year round the majority of classes will be held in the late summer and fall.

SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT

Growing up in rural Kansas, in town and on the farm, we often partook of the recreation of hunting the animals and birds. My Grandfather was a Hunters' Safety instructor. At age 10, we learned the protocol of hunting, the rules. I don't hunt anymore, but if I wanted to, I still have my hunter's safety card to get a license. Keep up the good work. No matte what your views on Gun Control and Hunting, safety should not be an issue. I'm all for SAFETY.
