COUNCIL MAJORITY SEEKS TAKEOVER OF URBAN RENEWAL
This November, Northglenn voters decide whether their property values are important enough to support progressive, pro-development or support a takeover attempt by a disgruntled City Council Majority resentful of Northglenn's legacy of Mayoral appointees. Council's Majority seeks an overthrow of the Northglenn Urban Renewal Authority - "NURA."
Denver runs a 3% general fund reserve while the Northglenn City Council Majority deems it necessary to exact 25% - all the while cutting City services to get there. Tantamount to a "Scrooge McDuck" mentality to Northglenn's future - miserly-counting money in the vault - current Council Majority does not signal invitations for new development.
Behold, the state-chartered NURA has a large business-tax-built savings specifically set aside for economic development, meant to enhance and restore languishing retail activities. But no, the "Scrooge McDuck Majority" wants these funds too - socked away in their vault! So, claiming this separate legally-established NURA Board "...does not represent Northglenners ...." Council Majority moves to kill it off.
While President Obama appoints a Supreme Court Justice and Governor Ritter legally makes his appointments, Northglenn's Council Majority yells, "Foul!" bemoaning the sitting Mayor's appointees to the NURA Board of Commissioners. "No," Council's Majority cries, "Out with the Bums!" Never mind NURA's 12 year-achievements supported Northglenn's public works, plus retailer improvements, that funded 55 projects worth $7.7 million including the Market Place.
What does this have to do with Northglenn property values? Hoarding money, not improving the City - cutting services, layoffs, operating poor public facilities, busted-up streets, etc., who wants to move to Northglenn? Home values are being diminished.
It takes money to spur economic development and civic improvements, not have funds stashed in Scrooge McDuck's vault. CAN SCROOGE McDUCK IMPROVE NORTHGLENN PROPERTY VALUES? Northglenn deserves better, improve itself, and keep its current NURA format intact.
