HubCap: What does Thanksgiving make you think of?
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 11/15/2006

The last time I properly celebrated Thanksgiving, with the whole turkey dinner thing, was in 2002. Although I had a great meal with my Aunt Vicki and Uncle Joel in Portland, the thing I'll probably remember most is my Greyhound bus ride from Missoula to Portland. It was 13 hours, overnight.

It was my first time on a Greyhound, if not the most relaxing, certainly the most interesting way to get from Point A to Point B. I got on the bus in Missoula, and tried to pick the nicest-looking person on the bus to sit next to, without looking like I was sizing everyone up.

Miles, who had gotten on in Bozeman, had recently beaten colon cancer, which was a good thing. However, his chemotherapy had left him permanently impotent, which may or may not have led to his wife kidnapping their daughter and skipping town a few weeks prior. This was not going to be a happy story.

For the next 13 hours, Miles and I talked, mostly about his diagnosis, medical treatment and recovery. He was a good guy, and I felt really bad that he had been dealt such a crappy hand. But, after the first six hours of the trip, I really wanted to get some sleep, and Miles really didn't want to let me, so I kept listening, on the dark bus rolling down I-84. It was the longest night of my life, not counting Christmas Eve 1985 when I couldn't sleep the entire night in anticipation of ... well, I can't remember exactly what my parents bought me, but it sure was great.

I arrived in Portland the next morning, said goodbye and good luck to Milesand heroically stayed awake until almost 8:00 that night, when I fell asleep reading a book on the couch. The next day, I woke up and had a Thanksgiving dinner that couldn't be beat. Since that year, I have not spent Thanksgiving at home, or even indoors. We're usually hiking, and when everyone else is tearing into Mr. Turkey, I'm probably eating a 50-50 mixture of peanuts and M&Ms. Also, I became a vegetarian a year and a half ago, so someone else is going to have to take up the slack and eat the approximately 6.5 turkey sandwiches I'd probably be eating from Nov. 24 to Nov. 28.

What are you doing for Turkey Day? Post your story here. I'll give you a start: "On Thanksgiving, I will eat ____________, sit and watch __________, and take a _-hour nap."

Also, feel free to share your Greyhound memories.

Here are some Thanksgiving-related links to get you thinking:

Stan Dyer, of Arvada, gives us a brief history of Thanksgiving, which started on June 30, 1623, well before the advent of the Hamilton Beach electric carving knife, and freedom of religion.

Daniel Barrett, of Aurora, gives us his own history, with help from Wikipedia.

YourHub.com's Jeff Thomas is looking for your holiday dinner disasters.

Gary Sky, of the Tri-County Health Department, shares some safe turkey preparation tips and some low-fat Thanksgiving ideas.

And Jayasri Radha, of Aurora, says you shouldn't eat turkey at all on Thanksgiving. What?

I have no shame: I eat turkey on Thanksgiving. I also eat mashed potatoes with gravy.
