Blog Entry 1 of 3 Life in Northglenn

Northglenn needs a new recreation center
Contributed by: Chris De May   on 8/21/2007

Like most suburban cities Northglenn doesn't have a downtown or community gathering place. The closet thing we have is the recreation center and it is being held together with duct tape and bailing wire. It's worn out and needs to be replaced. A new recreation center will serve all of us no matter our age or activity level. It is one of the few places everyone can use and enjoy that is affordable.

The Northglenn City Council has set a limit of $29 million that includes everything needed to build and furnish a new and improved recreation center with a total repayment cost of $52.7 million including interest. When we bought our homes in Northglenn I suspect that many of us took out mortgages that included interest, which greatly increased the final price of our homes. By taking out a 20 year bond the city will be able to build a recreation center that serves a larger portion of our residents and will ensure that those of us living in Northglenn and using the recreation center 15 years from now will contribute to the cost to build it. It's not fair for our current residents to pay the entire cost now so future residents don't have too. It comes down to do we want to make an investment in our community that stays within Northglenn.

It's true; some of our roads are in bad shape and need to be replaced. It would be sad though if we have the best roads in Denver but we only use them to commute or to leave Northglenn to go have fun. A new recreation center is not going to be cheap but the long term benefits far exceed the cost. Keep Northglenn a place we can all enjoy, please vote yes for a new recreation center.
