Northglenn's Election

Recently many of us recieved a flyer titled "TAXPAYER ALERT!" Taken at face value the information on this flyer is very frightening. The time has come to look at the cold hard numbers about the proposed Northglenn Recreation Center, not percentages which can be manipulated.

The flyer states "your property taxes will nearly double!" What the flyer doesn't say is the increase in property tax for a house valued at $200,000 will go up less than the price of a movie and a box of popcorn or $13.15 per month. Eligible senior citizens will pay approximatly half that amount or less than the price of a Grand Slam Breakfast. The flyer also neglects to tell you that there is a 5% contingency fund included to cover unexpected construction cost. The flyer continues saying that "over 74%" of Northglenn residents don't use our current recreation center according to a city survey. Again the flyer omits important facts; out of 36,857 residents only 820 completed and returned the survey. In 2006 our recreation center had 182,000 visits or almost 500 visits per day.

Whether we want to admit it or not we are competing with surrounding cities when it comes time to sell our homes. When families shop for new homes they look at schools, parks, libraries, and recreation centers. The new recreation center will encourage new families to buy homes in Northglenn keeping our community strong, vibrant, and increasing our property values.

This is an important election for Northglenn. Our choice in city council members will determine the direction and future of Northglenn for years to come. We have an opportunity to improve the quality of life for our current and future residents. Before we vote we need to make sure we have accurate facts and figures so we can make and informed decision. Voting YES for the recreation center is an investment in Northglenn.

Planning decisions have resulted in duplication of facilities. It has caused the citizens to avoid the facts of economic, social, and cultural life that bind the cities of this region together.

I look at the prices of homes sold in Northglenn every Saturday in the paper and the majority of homes sold in Northglenn are sell for $200,000 or less. Seniors that qualify for the homestead exemption and have a house valued at $200,000 or less will get the full exemption. Seniors who have a home worth more than $200,000 will get the full exemption for $200,000 of their home value and will only have to pay the for amount above $200,000.

I think a point of clarification about senior property taxes is needed. If a senior homeowner has a house valued at over $200,000 they will receive NO additional proprty tax exemption becaue the current property tax exemption is only up to $200,000. I believe a very small portion of seniors will "pay approximatly half that amount or less than the price of a Grand Slam Breakfast."

Just vote "YES" and be supportive of your community and our future! Dr. Reif - what exactly are you proposing our kids do at the Thornton rec - they never have ANY openings for classes. And, using your argument, why should I travel twice as far and pay twice as much? Support your community and don't sabotage it.

The current price for a child to use the Northglenn Recreation Center is $2.25 so for the price of $5.00 it cost them to use the Thornton Center they can use ours in Northglenn twice and have 50 cents left over. Isn't it is better to invest and spend our money in Northglenn than to support another cities facilities and have to pay higher prices.

Just vote "NO". And I do use the state of the art Thornton, Carpenter Recreation Center and Multipurpose Fields because they are within 1/4 mile of my house. I have NEVER used the Northglenn Rec Center because it is 4 miles away. At $5.00 per visit, we could send 10 Million of our children to Thornton and Westminster and let them maintain their facilities. There is such Better places to spend our money than to build another community pool that will deteriorate / depreciate in the NEXT 35 years.
