Rx RELIEF IN THE MAIL
Prices Slashed for Rx Meds, Savings for Consumers Add Up
(Denver) State Legislators, including State Representative Judy Solano (D-Thornton) announced a new program that will bring immediate relief for Coloradans struggling to pay health care bills.
The newly-launched COLORADO CARES Rx PROGRAM (
www.ColoradoCaresRx.com
) provides low-income and middle class Coloradans with a way to buy discount prescription medicines.
"Prescription drug prices have become so expensive, many patients are forced to choose between filling their medications and visiting their doctor," Rep. Solano explained with outrage.
Last year, legislators put their heads together and figured out a way to bring relief to the people who need it most-- low income and middle class Coloradans. Over 400,000 are eligible for this program which is available to Coloradans of any age that meet income requirements (300% of Federal Poverty Level). For a family of four that means annual income must be less than $63,600 or $5,300 monthly. The program is now available for the first time, and legislators are spreading the word to people who could benefit.
"I want to let people know that this program is available, and that you can start receiving discounts today by visiting
www.ColoradoCaresRx.com
or calling 1-800-769-3880," Rep. Solano explained.
Administered through Health Care Policy and Financing, the state negotiates the discount on behalf of Coloradans. While the prescriptions are filled by pharmacists, they arrive in the mail. Generic drugs come on the market after the original patent expires.
At least two Coloradans have already enrolled. Dennis Roe and his wife, Jeanie, suffer from chronic health conditions. They fill 23 prescriptions each month-- 14 for Jeanie who has diabetes, and nine for Dannie. They have been struggling to cover the $300 bill each month on their $40,000 annual income. The couple was one of the first to enroll in the Colorado Cares Rx program, and anticipate a cost savings of $150 each month. That is nearly $2,000 in savings each year.
"The savings for consumers really add up," Rep. Solano explained. "That's money that can help pay the mortgage, put gas in the car, or be put in a college savings account."
Over 125 common generic drugs will be available for a fraction of the cost including drugs to treat chronic conditions like allergies, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, seizures, insomnia, and heartburn.
Senate Bill 1, which created the Colorado Cares Rx Program, navigated its way through the Capitol in 2007 with the sponsorship of Majority Leader Alice Madden (D-Boulder) and Senator Bob Hagedorn (D-Aurora)
