Blog Entry 56 of 59 Northglenn Revealed
The City of Northglenn has a unique character for the North Metro Area. It seems it is always out of step with the neighbors. Sometimes ahead and sometimes not. I hope my efforts and some meaningful dialog will keep the community stable, secure and an asset to the area.

Northglenn manager's departure muddied by Garner
Contributed by: Gene Wieneke   on 6/2/2008

On the evening of May 22nd the council met in two executive sessions for the purpose of discussing two unrelated subjects. The following morning AJ Krieger agreed to submit his resignation effective that day after a settlement agreement was negotiated. The two previous managers resigned in early 2001 and February 2006.

Former Council member, Rosie Garner, was a participant in the 2006 resignation and directly involved in issues surrounding Mr. Krieger last fall. In a letter to the Northglenn-Thornton Sentinel and in a mass email, she is back on the campaign trail again. This time she is evidently claiming a bad memory. Let me help.

Come on, Rosie, you are summoning residents to the June 12th Council meeting to object to an action that you, yourself, took in February 2006. Then as it is now, the Council united in a super majority for the purpose of requesting a resignation from a sitting manager.

On the 12th the Council will listen to residents; some of which you have incited to heap accolades on Mr. Krieger while condemning us. Questions: Would you have formed an opinion after discussing all the details in private and then break faith with the other eight because of an orchestrated public protest?

Would you have taken the confidential information at your disposal and made it public? You didn't and We will not either. Your current mudslinging is no different or anymore accurate than it was last fall so keep pitching into the wind. The members of this Council want to move forward together. Try helping instead of campaigning.

From what I've read, Rosie has a good idea of why Mr. Krieger is resigning. Since she personally fought to increase the amount of severance pay that can not be the reason she is rallying people to attend the meeting.

Due to her admiration for certain members of the staff, including Mr. Krieger, she cannot be encouraging him to withdraw the resignation. It makes no sense for him to take a termination without health insurance. Since she voted for Nelson's resignation package in 2006, it can't be that she doesn't understand the process.

Less than a month after the residents turned her out of office, and a month before I took office, she started her public campaign to regain it through a recall election. She needs to distort the record and create justifications for the petition. She also needs to demonstrate her power to motive residents while testing the waters. The shoe does fit.

They are contrary to a healthy and vibrant community. And the only cure for them is to chase them away from the public square by attacking them with their own bitter and nonsensical diatribes. Just look at this blog. Gene is certifiable kook. Better yet, just ignore him and walk away—or drive away, if you can still afford to do so. People like him don’t know how to govern their own lives let alone lead for the sake of other people. Give him enough room and he will bankrupt Northglenn. Do you really want to be around for that?

Guys like Gene control things for the sake of controlling things. They hate government so much, that they feel compelled to show you how much they detest it by running it--with pathological self hated of government and the governed. How ironic! People like Gene Wieneke are a communicable disease of the body politic.

People like him will propose cutting waste here and there, following every crack-pot fraud, waste, and abuse conspiracy they can find. The incompetence of their type of bureaucracy is in wasting the Northglenn residents’ time by settling old scores with old farts. There is a line from a movie called "The American President," to describe guys like Gene, and the line goes like this. "We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you, Bob Rumson (substitute Gene Wieneke) is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it.” Cranks like Gene are not visionary, just because they have a blog and can tie a couple of words together (albeit, incoherently).

Now look at the University of Colorado Campus at Fitzsimons. Look at the facilities at the former Lowry Air Force Base. Look at the community as Stapleton. Look at downtown Denver redevelopment. And, consider the open space, bike trails, and other recreation opportunities from Wheat Ridge into Golden. Then, look at Northglenn. Every suburb around it is prospering. Broomfield is alive and growing. The Boulder burbs are interesting and inviting. Northglenn will suffer a slow and miserable death lead by slow and miserable people like Gene Wieneke.

I have lived in here in my 20s, 30s and now, I am in my 40s. And at no point would I consider moving to a place like Northglenn, Colorado. Is there a train to the northern burbs? No. Besides some open space, are there attractive public facilities for me or my family? No. Are the home values rising? No. Are the taxes high relative to every other place I have lived in Colorado? Yes. When I lived in Aurora, it was called ‘Saudi Aurora,” because it was so far “out of the way.”

When I moved to Colorado back in 1990, I looked at the map of the Denver metro area and wondered where I would live. I chose Aurora, because I was in the military and wanted to be near Fitzsimons Army Medical Center and Lowery Air Force Base. Then when I got out, I moved downtown, to be closer to Denver and to the Auraria Campus. Once I could afford to buy a house, I chose to stay in Denver; in the West Hightland of NW Denver. There, my taxes were low, city services were great, and ammenities were close by. Now, I live just west of Denver in Wheat Ridge. Here, I am still near downtown, closer to the mountains and open space, near public transit; a bike ride to the bus stop and then off to the light rail. I have a great recreation center close by, and there are plenty of nice stores, bars and restaurants. My house is 2400 square feet; a brick, custom home built in 1959 on 1/4 acre. I even have water rights for my yard and garden.

Property values will drop because no one will want to move to Northglenn. In addition to having the most contentious council in the metro area, Northglenn lacks vision. Council members are more concerned with their personal agendas and egos than they are with the welfare of the city and its citizens. Both posts below reflect the out dated way of thinking. Foregoing expenditures that will create economic opportunity is penny wise and pound foolish. Again, look at Federal Heights; that is what Northglenn is becoming. This is not a smear, it is reality. Ignore what these council members do at your own peril. The proof will be evident by further declining home prices, revenues, and services. In four years, the damage done to this city will be apparent. Good luck with the Wieneke wing of the city council, you’re going to need it.

You don’t have to look too hard to find how Gene has helped the City of Northglenn since joining the council, that is, if you are interested in the truth. Gene was directly responsible for saving the City almost $200,000 on the recent purchase of the financial software. Why couldn’t the former City Manager find that savings? I think you are looking for the political smear not the truth. You must believe as the previous council believed, that the City can spend it way to financial health. This thinking motivated the previous council to invest $10 million dollars on the 120th and Grant project without ever evaluating its economic feasibility. Has anyone else noticed that the project has changed from sales tax generating to a jobs creation project? If property values drop it will be because of the deferred infrastructure maintenance by the previous council in order to find the cash for the 120th and Grant boondoggle. So, smear on and don’t bother with reality.

Good going Gene! Rosie won't quit until she regains her lost seat or until the voters tell her in no uncertain terms what a bad job she did as a council member. There are obviously a few people who think that Northglenn can continue to spend the tax payers dollars as if they grew on trees, and a Rosie is exactly what they deserve. Thank you for your hard fought stand in the face of a group of Rosie lovers who can't stand the fact she lost the election.

Nice ad hominem attack. Wieneke will not be content until he drives Northglenn into a ditch. Look at what he accomplished in Federal Heights. When Northglenn citizens see that their property values continue to plummet because Wieneke refuses to spend tax dollars on projects that would make Northglenn a desirable place to live as well as a destination for business, he'll get the boot. How do you know Garner wants the seat back? Did you ask her? Why would anyone want to be part of the three-ring circus that Northglenn city council has become? Wieneke has spent years slinging mud. What one positive thing has Wieneke done for Northglenn?
