We're to blame for the gas prices
Contributed by: John Eisel   on 7/12/2006

Here's a quick economics lesson: The price of a product depends on its availability and demand.

Take gasoline, for example. Everyone needs it and there's been issues with it coming to us. Of course to pay more for it.

These higher prices are a direct result of our driving habits. We need the biggest cars with the most power and we're willing to drive everywhere, even when it's not always necessary.

The result is a driver, all by his or herself, parked in the middle of gridlock on I-25 on the daily trip from LoDo to Highlands Ranch.

Think about how this driver could have made things better:

1. Get a car with better gas mileage.
Depending on the SUV, the typical gas mileage is 12-24 city and 18-30 highway.

Imagine improving that gas mileage by onlyfive percent. Let's assume the combined gas mileage of all cars is about 20 miles per hour, 28 in the city. That bumps it up to 21/29.4. That measure would save about a million barrels of gasoline a day. Where I got this info from.

My fiance and I have two cars: A 1998 Ford Taurus and 93 Toyota Camry. I drive through downtown from Montbello, while she only drives to Stapleton. Usually, I'm driving the Taurus, but at 20 miles a gallon, we've switched cars.

2. Car pool.
By having driving with one other person, that eliminates one car. That's one less car on the highway. Gas costs and pollution produced are automatically split in half.

I understand a lot of people have jobs where carpooling is not possible because of job demands. But how many of you out there go to work and go home on an almost clockwork basis?

3. Jump on public transportation.
I know it can be inconvienent sometimes, but trust me, it's a lot cheaper than paying for gas, parking and maintenance in the long run. I'd probably ride the bus more often, except for my job as a journalist and that I have school after work on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Amen, brother. I ride a 1999 Schwinn mountain bike or a pair of Timberlands to work every day.
