Blog Entry 3 of 6 Girl Talk
I am new to Denver, a recent college graduate in Journalism. This blog will talk about all the random thoughts that cross a 23-year-old female's mind. My interests are in art, theater and writing and I would like to share that with you, my neighbors. I enjoy being with my friends, my two cats, Jack and Cessie, and plan on experiencing all the fun things to do in Denver.

Chapel Haven has a message
Contributed by: Laura Mayo/YourHub.com   on 6/8/2007

When I was doing my community outreach on June 7, I drove by a sign that left me questioning.

Many religious organizations leave signs out front of their churches with messages to the public, but this sign was different.

The sign at Chapel Haven Seventh Adventist Church at 9911 Huron St., in Northglenn seemed to be using humor with an underlying message.

The sign read: "Don't be so open-minded that your brains fall out."

The question this sign left me with was, do advertisments like this bring people to their church or, do they steer people away?

Church signs were designed for announcing upcoming events and/or displaying the message title that the pastor is preaching for that week. It has become common practice for churches to use their signs as message boards in order to be more catching. The idea is that when the unchurched passed by, they would be intrigued by the quote or one-liner that is displayed. The hope is that they would be interested enough to come in and check out a Sunday service and potentially accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. Today churches are striving more than ever to speak in a way that is appealing to non-Christians in order to invite them in and make them feel comfortable. Signs are one (inexpensive) way for a church to communicate to the local public. If the sign gets one person in the door, then it's worth it. We do not have our own sign in front of our building because we lease from another church. But if we did, I'm not sure how we'd do it. Shalom. Michael Gonzales, www.graftedin.com

I was covering the local swimming pool in Thornton and came across the sign. I found it to be very funny. So far, I can see many people have read this entry, but no one has responded. I am not sure if this subject makes people nervous or what? What comments have you received?
