A COMMUNITY OF TRUST
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 4/18/2007

Trust is a belief in the honesty and integrity of others, a confidence that they can be depended on for support; an expectation that other people have good intentions. Neighbors who have trustworthy relations are more likely to assist one another by watching homes, lend tools, and watch for the kids.

Trust can deter crime as citzens are more likely to intervene when they see a fight break out or witness graffiti, and call the police when they witness a crime or gang activity. Litter, graffiti, crime, drug use show others that some neighbors are experiencing DISORDER and make them feel the potential for harm.

It is easier for companies to cooperate in regions where trust exists among them. In OTHER regions, there has not been high levels of trust, and Rotary has had to help build trust by creating opportunities for complementaries to meet and in collaborative production. After repeated interactions, many of these people develop high levels of trust, which in turn enhances future collaborations. Members rely heavily on their network for many important aspects of their lives; social support, employment, and service opportunities and longtime residents are being well educated in the community.

Rotary creates structured organization by calling weekly meetings where people can come together in a POSITIVE and CONSTRUCTIVE manner, get to know one another, and develop trusting relations over time.
