Like a poster for an upcoming movie, a sign sits near E.B. Rains Junior Memorial Park in Northglenn proclaiming the coming of a new movie complex.
Opening day for the new Century Theaters 16-screen building is set for summer 2006 with construction beginning this fall, according to Nancy Klasky, Century vice president for marketing.
The theater is just another step in the redevelopment of the area south of the park and the Northglenn Recreation Center on Community Center Drive. Retail stores and dining areas will be going up west of the theater location.
“It’s key for the redevelopment of this area,” said Northglenn special projects director Jerry Starling of the movie complex. “It’s sort of the anchor.”
Klasky said serving as the anchor was a big selling point for Century.
"We've been extraordinarily successful whenever we’re a part of a redevelopment project,” Klasky said. “It’s mutually beneficial to the city and us. We bring a lot of patrons to the area. It makes it a destination for all of us.”
Starling said a stoplight and crosswalk will be added near the theater entrance on Grant Street and Community Center Drive.
Starling said Century will lease the 6.51 acres of land from the city for $1 per year for 20 years.
However, the city will bring in tax money on concessions, admissions and property. Klasky said the theater should generate 125 to 150 full-time or part-time positions, depending on the season.
The San Rafael, Calif.-based company has theaters in Lakewood and Aurora, but Klasky said the Northglenn theater will be unique.
“All the amenities remain state of the art, but we custom each theater,” she said.
Starling said the new building will have a 106-foot ‘blade’ sign, with the rest of the building reaching about 50-feet tall.
