New businesses come online in Northglenn
Contributed by: Russell Gibson on 3/1/2007

It may seem to many residents that the City of Northglenn have adopted construction cone orange and yellow as its colors for 2007.

But, the increasingly common sight of big piles of dirt and men-at-work signs is a welcome one to the city after working diligently through 2006 to get several projects to the construction phase for the new year.

A number of long-term economic development and capital improvement projects, which have been the city's focus over the last year, are now moving into the stages that residents will be able to see and soon enjoy.

Courting economic redevelopment, a priority for the city, continued throughout 2006. Northglenn's location and access to highways makes it an attractive place to do business, and 2006 was the year of getting that message out.

In 2007, efforts will start to pay off with three proven retailers set to open up shop in our city.

Woodley's Furniture will open its doors in the Marketplace Shopping Center at 104th Ave. and I-25 in March. The furniture company, based out of Longmont has enjoyed growing success since its formation in 1979.

Also part of the economic revitalization in the city, is the electronics retailer Circuit City. The store, which will share the remodeled Mervyn's building with Woodley's, opened its doors for business on February 15 and Woodley's has plans to follow suit.

Demolition will begin on the vacant America's Best Value Inn on the southwest corner of I-25 and 104th Ave. Best Buy Co., Inc., the nation's top specialty retailer of electronics, bought the site in late 2006. Company representatives hope to have demolition of America's Best Value Inn and construction of the new store complete in time to open their doors for business in August 2007.

The city is also excitedly looking into prospects for the continued development of the 120th Avenue and Grant Street Shopping Center.

In addition to the new businesses opening in 2007, the City budget for the year includes hefty resources for capital improvements such as completion of the Greenway Trail Project at 104th Ave. and construction of the Croke Reservoir Eastern Shoreline Improvements.

The Greenway Trail Project adds to Northglenn's already striking natural beauty by replacing the asphalt pathways with wider, concrete paths that will meander through newly planted trees and landscaped berms with park-bench seating set at intervals along the entire trail.

The Croke Reservoir project is the largest project set to begin construction
in 2007 and includes reinforcement and widening of the existing shoreline to accommodate the Huron St. reconstruction. A ten-feet wide concrete path will continue the Greenway Trail along the shore of the reservoir punctuated by two promontories extending into the water-one with steps leading down to the water's edge, the other standing six-feet above it and rimmed by an ornate wrought iron fence and decorative street lighting.

The city is excited about the coming changes and looks forward to seeing the positive impact new business and more beautiful public spaces will have on our community.
