The President is elected every 4 years in November. The general election is always held in November. Registered voters can vote for the candidate of their choice.
The President is actually elected by the electoral college. After the votes are counted, each state's representatives of the electoral college vote for the candidate who wins the majority vote in their state.
The people vote for a candidate from the Democratic or Republican or an Independent party. A party is a group of people with similar ideas about government. The Democratic and Republican parties are the largest in the United States.
The candidates first run in Primary Elections in 50 different states, plus territories. Then, each party has a convention at which they chose their candidate for President. Usually the person who won the most votes in the primary is picked. Then the Presidential Candidate picks a Vice-President Candidate. The party candidates campaign together.
The candidate who is elected President in November is inaugurated in January. The winner must wait until January to be sworn in as President of the United States of America.

“Americans have fought back against terror by choosing to overcome evil with good. By loving their neighbors as they would like to be loved, countless citizens have answered the call to help others. They have contributed to relief efforts, improved homeland security in their communities, and volunteered their time to aid those in need. This spirit of service continues to grow as thousands have joined together, committing themselves to changing America one heart at a time through the momentum of millions of acts of decency and kindness.”
