The old cat gets new life
Contributed by: Bob Wieser on 2/8/2007

In July 2007 a 17-year-old Northglenn High School junior, Brett Wieser will enter his car, a classic 1967 Mercury Cougar in a National car show being held in Denver, hosted by the Colorado Cougar Club.

For his 16th birthday, Brett bought the car and it needing many major repairs. Quinslick said the car could be described as beauty and the beast, because with weak brakes and loose steering box it sure look pretty but was a monster to drive.

Wieser said that winter was tough without a heater that worked.

Within a years time, with the help of Quinslick, Weiser was able to fix all the problems. He added front power disc brakes and rebuilt the steering box and added a heater unit.

Additional improvements were made, such as, an electronic ignition, dual exhaust, and electionic brain box that operates the rear turn signal blinking pattern.

The 2006 school year was special for Weiser, he said. "I am taking auto tech classes at the Bowman Technical Center in Thornton. My instructors are real cool and have given me many new tips and ideas on how to upgrade my car, and my knowledge of car care has grown to where I am now able to do many repairs on my own."

The 2007 nationals will be a 3-day event held at Four Points Sheridan Hotel, at I-25 and Hampden from July 20-22. It will be a huge event because it is the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the Cougar in 1967, said Bill Quinslick, founding member of the Colorado Cougar Club. The nationals are expecting 150 car to participate, with the Virginia Car Club bringing rides out on a car hauler. European collectors have responded with reservations to attend the show, said the Cougar Club.

The Mercury Cougar is a close cousin to the Ford Mustang with 2 unique differences. It has flip up headlights that hide in the grill when not in use, and tail lights that blink in a sequential pattern. Those features are what helped the Cougar win car of the year honors from the Motor Trend magazine in 1967.
