Coins for a Cure for Cancer
Contributed by: Marge Carlow on 2/1/2008

WEBSTER LAKE RELAY FOR LIFE SEPTEMBER 6-7, 2008 FORM YOUR TEAMS NOW! KICK-OFF AND TEAM REGISTRATION IS APRIL 14. Do you know someone who has, or has had cancer? Unfortunately many of us do. Cancer seems to touch most of our lives in some way or another. Relay for Life is all about a community taking up the fight against cancer. A group of committed volunteers is working with the American Cancer Society to raise money to help find a cure for this dreaded disease. Twenty committee members met recently to begin planning for the 2008 Webster Lake Relay for Life which will be held September 6 and 7 in Northglenn, at E. B Rains Park. Every successful event requires pre-planning and the committee welcomes anyone who would like to help plan this event. Or maybe you'd like to be a team captain and organize a team of friends, family or co-workers and camp out at Webster Lake. Or you can join a team and be part of the fun on September 6 and 7, 2008. The planning committee kicked off a "Coins for A Cure for Cancer" challenge by asking everyone to take a container and toss pennies and small change into it for the next seven months. The committee invites the community to join them in saving their pennies and donating them to the Webster Lake Relay for Life. It's amazing how quickly those coins count up! Relay for Life is a nation-wide overnight walk/run event that raises funds for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. In Northglenn's Relay for Life, survivors of cancer are also honored at a brunch, a victory lap and during opening ceremonies. In September, 2007 over 700 people gathered at Webster Lake in Northglenn for the overnight event, as 39 teams set up their campsites, joined in games, special events and music and walked or ran around the lake. The goal is to keep at least one team member walking at all times, both day and night. Teams raise money through donations and $102,000 was raised at the 2007 Webster Lake Relay for Life in Northglenn. While this was very commendable, the committee hopes to exceed this in 2008.
