Gobble up safety this Thanksgiving
Contributed by: North Metro Fire Rescue on 11/13/2007

One of the most honored ways to celebrate Thanksgiving is to prepare a homemade feast for our loved ones. Yet, when entertaining guests, it is easy to forget the importance of kitchen safety. Thanksgiving is the peak day of the year for kitchen fires and North Metro is reminding its residents to cook with care!

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking equipment is the leading cause of fires and fire injuries. Nearly all home cooking fires are linked to a single device, the range (both the stovetop and oven compartment). And the top reason for these fires was unattended cooking.

While we are organizing and preparing our feast, we can get distracted by people, the phone ringing or other chores. It is important to pay attention to what is on the stove, even if it has a long cook time. Try to keep yourself occupied in the kitchen if at all possible and if you do leave the area, bring a spoon with you, so you can remember to come back in a short amount of time.

North Metro Fire Rescue hopes you'll use the following kitchen safety recommendations while enjoying this year's festivities and all year long:

· Don't leave cooking food unattended.

· Roll up your sleeves while cooking and avoid wearing loose clothing.

· Ban children and pets from a three-foot "safe zone" around your stove.

· Keep pot handles turned in to avoid spills.

· Keep pot holders, dish towels, food packaging and other clutter off the stovetop.

· Clean your cooking equipment, built-up grease can catch fire.

· If you are simmering, baking, boiling or roasting food, check it regularly and remain in the home while food is cooking. Use a timer to remind you that the stove or oven is on.

· Stay alert. Don't cook if you are sleepy, have been drinking alcohol or have taken medicine that makes you drowsy.

· Don't store things that can burn in an oven, microwave, or toaster oven.

· Never hold a small child while cooking.

Also, if you have a smoke alarm that becomes a nuisance when you are cooking-don't get tempted to stop the noise by disabling the alarm. The best choice for your family's protection is to find a more appropriate location for the alarm. Move the smoke alarm out of the kitchen or a little further away from kitchen-but keep it on the same level of the home.

North Metro Fire Rescue is dedicated to your quality care. North Metro Fire Rescue provides fire protection, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response and rescue services to their community.
