Love reconnected
Contributed by: Vicki Carothers on 2/9/2007

When I was 16, I was the love beads, bell bottom rock and roll sort of girl living in Brighton. Nolan, 19 at the time, was the country music cowboy type living in Salida. Complete opposites.

This particular weekend I was spending a couple of days in Salida with my cousin. I was walking down mainstreet, and to hear my husbands side, he saw me and instantly new he had to meet me. He circled around the block in his blue chevy, but I had disappeared. That evening, my cousin and I went out on a double date, my date being a blind date.

The guys arrived, I jumped in the backseat of the car with my date, my cousin jumped in the front seat with her date, who happened to be Nolan. We drove around for a bit. We stopped at a gas station, both guys stepped out and when they came back, Nolan jumped in the back with me, and my date jumped in the front with my cousin. Nolan explained to me that he had seen me earlier in the day, and that he had to take this opportunity to get to know me. It was a little awkward at first.

My cousin and her date seemed to be happy with the change. Nolan and I hit it off and had the most wonderful time. It was instant friendship and love. I went back home to Brighton, and we became pen-pals.

Whenever possible, I took the Grayhound bus to Salida to see him, and he would drive down to see me as often as he could. I would save all my change to call him long-distance on payphones. Eventually he moved to Denver and enrolled in a college to be close to me. He went to work for my father. Soon after he surprised me with a $10 engagement ring he purchased from a 7-11, and asked me to marry him. I accepted. But being 16 and not near as responsible as Nolan, it never happened.

He graduated from school, moved back home and in time married and had a son. Eventually I also married and had a daughter. Two years later my marriage ended in divorce. Always loving Salida, I decided to move there. I found a job and rented a cute little house. Soon after, I saw Nolan, and to my surprise, (and delight) I found that he too had divorced.

We dated for about a month before he again, surprised me with a most beautiful diamond ring, not purchased from a 7-11!, and asked me to marry him. I accepted. We moved to Denver, married, had a son of our own, and have been together for 20 years. We certainly have had our bumps along the way, but we are inseperable,(some friends say connected at the hip), best friends, happy, in love and very very fortunate. Our differences help to make our lives interesting and full.

And I still hold close to my heart all of my letters from him and the $10 7-11 ring he bought me 32 years ago!
