Almost 45 acres of the approximately 137 acres that comprise the Northwest Open Space has been set aside and protected by the Northglenn City Council as the Oscar Arnold Nature Area. The Northglenn city council voted to set the designated area aside as an undeveloped nature area for the enjoyment and use of current and future residents of the city and the community in general.
The area includes most of the land between 112th Avenue south to the Farmers Highline canal and extends from Pecos Street west to the city's water treatment plant. The creating ordinance says the area is to be a continuing community resource for ecosystem education and wildlife habitat.
This action by Council expands and better defines the nature area, first designated in 1992, named in honor of longtime area resident Oscar
Arnold
. Arnold lived on and farmed the land in what is now Northglenn for 84 years, a long continuous period of time that is a presumed record and may never be broken.
Arnold was born a few miles west of the current city of Northglenn in 1898. His father purchased the 45 acre farm in what is now part of the City's Northwest Open Space and moved the Arnold family there in 1907. That was the home Oscar Arnold resided in until 1982, when he moved to the City-owned house adjacent to the water treatment plant and now the home of the Adams County Child Advocacy Center. Arnold died in 1992 at the age of 92.
