PATHS are linear elements and represent both vehicular and pedestrian movement. Whether major arterial or neighborhood street, urban thoroughfare or meandering woodland trail, each should denote a degree of usage that is unique and clearly communicates PROPORTION and HIERARCHY.

EDGES like paths, are linear. Because they represent BOUNDARIES that are either soft or hard, REAL or perceived, they are important organizing elements. They can be represented in a variety of ways.

DISTRICTS encompass areas of commonality. Although less defined, they should be contiguous, fluid, and graphically serve as a background for more focused, active elements.

NODES are specific points of recognition. They are DESTINATIONS and very often represent the CORE or CENTER of a DISTRICT as well as a transition between 2 Districts.

LANDMARKS are important Reference Points. By nature they are "Attention-Getters".

OPEN SPACE can be void, left-over space where the lot was too small, was a "funny" SHAPE or where the environmental constraints prohibited building. Also, again, OPEN SPACE can be a series of well-placed, appropriately sized COMMONS that provide residents a variety of choices for relaxation, PLAY, and interaction.

STUCTURES are buildings.
Trees are NATURAL BUFFERS.
SCREENS are fences.

WATER is still "water."
