Lest we forget

NORTHGLENN - The third annual North Area Law Enforcement Memorial Candelight Vigil was help on May 18, appropriately enough at E.B. Rains Jr. Park.

Cpl. Rains, a member of the Northglenn Police Department, was one of seven peace officers who was honored with a wreath during the ceremony. Rains was killed during duty on May 30, 1984.

Other law enforcement agencies present included the Thornton Police Department, Federal Heights Police Department, Brighton Police Department, Adams County Sheriff's Department and the Colorado State Patrol. Members of other agencies from across the region were also present.

Besides Rains, other officers honored with wreaths included:
Deputy Leonard Higgins, Adams County Sheriff's Office, died Oct. 11, 1923
Deputy Frank J. Jackson, Adams County Sheriff's Office, died Aug. 26, 1960
Deputy Danny R. Barnes, Adams County Sheriff's Office, died May 31, 1973
Sgt. Dale R. McLaughlin, Adams County Sheriff's Office, died Dec. 26, 1988
Marshall James D. Ellis, Brighton Police Department, March 6, 1908
Officer Perry Messina, Federal Heights Police Department, Sept. 3, 1980

Speakers at the event, among others,included Chaplain Brett Truax, Northglenn Mayor Kathie Novak, Northglenn inspector Beth Carmosino, Northglenn Police Chief Russell Van Houten, Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr, Brighton officer Micah Acker, Federal Heights Lt. Rodger McLaughlin, Northglenn Deputy Chief Rod Walters, chaplain Cary Johnson and a performance of Amazing Grace by Thornton officer Mark Quintana.
