Randy Crock joined an Elite Gathering of Eagles on Feb. 5. He is the second Scout in the fledgling Stargate School Troop 311 to reach the rank of Eagle Scout. The Medicine Bear Lodge of the Tahosa District, Order of the Arrow bestowed this honor on him during the Court of Honor.
Randy has been involved in Boy Scouts for nine years, beginning as a Tiger Cub 1996. 1997 saw Randy join Pack 524. Fishing Derbies, trips to the beach, camping, as well as Camp Chris Dobbins were Cub Scout Activities. There was camping and sharing these experiences with parents. Raingutter Regattas, Archery, canoeing, and service projects were part of his Cub Scout days. February1999 at the Blue and Gold banquet Randy became a Webelo.
The Arrow of Light ceremony on Feb. 20, 2001, at the Court of Honor made Randy a Boy Scout. With the move to Boy Scouts, Randy joined Troop 139. In 2002 Randy completed his first class requirements and received his first class rank at an outdoor Court of Honor in E.B. Rains Park. Troop 139 went to Yellowstone for their summer Expedition Camping. They were also given the opportunity to present Colors at a Rockies game. Life Scout was achieved in the fall of 2003. Randy was librarian and bugler for Troop 139.
In January 2004, a new Boy Scout troop was chartered to serve the Northglenn–Thornton area. Randy was a founding member of Troop 311. The troop was small and all the boys with scouting experience were given many responsibilities and leadership opportunities. Randy served as an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Librarian, Bugler. The boys elected him to be inducted into the Honor Society for Boy Scouts: Order of the Arrow. During the summer of 2004 Randy completed his Eagle Project: Construction and Installment of Bat Boxes around Eastlake Reservoir No. 3. His project could fill a whole notebook (in fact it did). He participated in Junior Leader Training in October 2004.
Spring 2005 Randy was inducted into the Order of the Arrow Brotherhood. Since he was named a Venture Scout in November 2004, he had the uniform for staff at Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch in Elbert. So Randy made Peaceful Valley his home for five weeks the summer of 2005. He was a Councilor In Training. Just before he left for camp, he was elected Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 311. He is currently serving his second term as Senior Patrol Leader.
Randy is now a tenth grade honor student at the Denver School of Science and Technology. He joined the Tech Crew, a student organization responsible for the installation and maintenance of this new school’s top-of-the-line technology. He joined Destination ImagiNation, a creative problem solving team competition and will compete in the Denver Regional competition March 4.
Randy’s other extracurricular activities include serving on the ceremonial team for the Medicine Bear Lodge Tahosa Chapter Order of the Arrow. Once a month he is in charge of the Audiovisual booth at the Northglenn United Methodist Church. This summer will be the first time in five years when he will not be a volunteer staffer at Cub Scout Day camp. He has chosen to be a fulltime staffer at either Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch or Tahosa Scout Camp.
Randy is the last of Barney Miller’s grandsons to receive a Eagle. His Silver Beaver grandfather has awarded three other eagles to grandsons: Scott Miller 1999, John Gregory Miller 2001, and Bart Christopher Miller 2002. Both of Randy’s uncles were Eagles as well. Randy has been inspired by friends in Troop 139, as well as his schoolmate Ian Clanton-Thuon, who blazed the trail before him to Eagle. Truly, Randy has a cloud of Eagles who have surrounded him with hope and encouragement. He is now one of them.
