On June 27, 2008 the 5th Battalion 19th Special Forces Group were officially welcomed back after a 7 month tour of duty in Iraq. This homecoming ceremony was even more celebrated, seeing as how they brought every man home to reunite with their family.
Among those honored for their service were two Northglenn residents SSG
MIke Shumate
and SPC
Ryan Teter
. In addition to recognizing these soldiers for their service,
Jenn Shumate
was also recognized as FRG (Family Readiness Group) Volunteer of the year. Jenn's role with the FRG included event coordination, monthly newsletter, monthly meetings and most importantly she was there to offer emotional support to families and friends of those soldiers in active duty.
"We are very proud to have Jenn on our team! She is a very valuable asset to our FRG," commented
Rachel Teter
. "Not only did she have to deal with the difficulties and stresses of having her husband deployed, she also helped her two sons,
Sam
and
Grant
deal with the separation from their father. Even with all that on her plate she attended college and some how managed to find the time and resources for any of the wives or families that needed it."
By the reaction of the families when their soldiers came through the door onto the ceremony floor it was apparent that everybody there was very happy and relieved to have their men home safe and sound. It takes strength and effort from both the families and the soldiers to make it through a deployment, and now this commitment must endure while the focus shifts from deployment to reintegration back to their normal lives.
I would like to THANK all of these soldiers and those who support them.
