After a tornado swept through Windsor on May 22, members of the City of Northglenn Building Department responded to a call for help.
Staff members
Bill Volz
,
Jack Lawall,
David Malinowski
and
Monica Bordash
each spent part of the next four days in Windsor inspecting structural integrity and the gas and electrical systems in buildings along the path of the tornado.
This helped Windsor residents know as soon as possible when and if they could return to their homes and buildings. Northglenn staff also worked with the Town of Windsor Building Department to review plans and issue emergency permits.
"We were just up there to help another community in need, and that's what it's all about," said Volz, electrical and building inspector for the city.
The tornado traveled 34 miles with speeds reaching 130 to 150 miles per hour. One person was killed and many left homeless as the tornado ripped through homes and sent dangerous debris flying through the air.
"You can see first hand the destructive force of the tornado," said Volz.
Volz could also see the benefit of recently enacted building codes. Houses that had been built in the past 10 years had considerably less damage than houses built just five years earlier.
Volz said he saw a house with one of the sides torn off from the tornado, while the rest of the house remained standing. For someone seeking refuge in the home, it could mean the difference between life and death.
"No amount of formal training could substitute for the first-hand experience our staff encountered working the widespread disaster area," said
Rick Davis
, chief building official.
Besides Northglenn, Davis said Thornton, Denver, Erie, Fort Collins and Parker were some of the cities that sent building officials to Windsor.
"The city is pleased it could offer such expert assistance to the townspeople of Windsor in a time of need," he added.
