Girl Scouts help "Spruce" up E.B. Rains Park
Contributed by: City of Northglenn Public Communications on 5/28/2008

Members of Troop 1320 of the Northwoods Girl Scout Unit finished off the last requirements for their Bronze Awards by planting a Blue Spruce at the east end of E.B. Rains Jr. Memorial Park in Northglenn on May 23.

In addition, the Northwoods Unit donated $450 in recent cookie sales to have a memorial bench dedicated near the tree as a symbol of the hard work and dedication of the unit.

The troop, made up of girls from the Northglenn and Thornton area, had passed out fliers in Thornton about stormwater management and water conservation before planting the tree, which was donated by the Lowe's store in Northglenn.

Three City of Northglenn employees aided the girls by marking out the perfect spot, helping dig the hole, and positioning it in the ground correctly.

The girls earned Earth Action and Eco merit badges on their way to earning the Bronze Award. According to the Girls Scouts Web site, www.girlscouts.org, the Bronze Awards is the highest honor for a Junior Girl Scout.

This bench dedication was part of the Northglenn Memorial Tree & Bench Program, organized by the non-profit Northglenn Community Foundation.

Troop 1320's planting of the Blue Spruce, which is the official tree of the State of Colorado, was separate from the Memorial Tree & Bench Program.
