The three North Metro Fire Rescue personnel and Brush Attack truck that left on Wednesday, June 25 to assist with wild land fire fighting efforts in California have been assigned to a Colorado Strike Team. The North Metro unit has combined with additional Colorado fire fighters from Mountain View Fire Department, Rocky Mountain Fire Department and Chaffee County fire fighters under the CAL Fire agency.
The group is currently waiting for the arrival of one additional engine crew-this will make their strike team consist of five engine/brush attack units. The Colorado Strike Team has been assigned to Hollister, California which is approximately 40 miles inland from Monterey.
The Colorado Strike Team has been notified that a round of dry lightening storms are expected to begin today and last through the weekend in California. Their mission during this deployment will be to perform the initial attack on any new fires that result from these storms. Their goal is to catch these fires before they grow. The Colorado Strike Team could possibly travel up to 100 miles to attack any new fire that is created by the storms.
North Metro responded to the request for assistance from the Fort Collins Interagency Wildfire Dispatch Center. The Northern California Joint Information Center is reporting that there are over 800 fires that are not contained.
