North metro firefighter receives miltary award

On June 2, 2009, Governor Ritter signed a proclamation naming 2009 as "The Year of the Non-Commissioned Officer." In attendance was North Metro Fire Rescue Engineer Don Woodmansee who received the Western Region 2009 "Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year" award from United States Army National Guard this past April. He competed for this honor in Las Vegas after earning the title of the 2009 "Colorado Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year" from the Colorado Army National Guard.

Woodmansee has been a fire fighter with North Metro since October 2001. "Without the support of North Metro and their commitment to my national service, I would have struggled through my deployments and possibly chose not to extend my service to the National Guard," explained Woodmansee. "My personal sacrifice also includes sacrifices made by my employer and I am grateful for their willingness to work with me and ease my concerns regarding the future of my fire service career.

In addition to being deployed to Louisiana for post-Hurricane Katrina efforts, Woodmansee served in Iraq for 15 months as well as supported NATO operations during an eight month deployment to Yugoslavia.

Woodmansee was awarded the honor of Western Region Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year through a competition that tested his effectiveness as a soldier. The competition included five events and an oral board. Woodmansee represents seven states and Guam with this title.

Woodmansee is a valuable member of the North Metro Fire Rescue District. He currently holds the rank of Engineer and has previously served on the department's wild land and hazardous material teams.
