City Trails and Sidewalks Plowed According to Priority

Snow removal extends to major trails and sidewalks many residents use to get around

The Parks Division of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is responsible for the snow removal efforts of the city's approximately 30 miles of public sidewalks and greenway trails. Due to the limitation of snow removal equipment, a priority system has been devised to initially target snow removal efforts on areas that are most highly utilized by pedestrians and then progress through the less traveled trails and sidewalks. Special emphasis is also given to areas in and around school zones, as well as school bus pick up and drop off areas, for the safety and welfare of children.

Upon completion of the clearing of these primary trails, which are generally associated with serving businesses, government offices and high-density residential areas, crews commence the clearing of secondary trails. These less traveled and utilized trails often serve as collectors that connect to our primary trail system which, in turn, connects to the greater regional trail system of the northern metro area. The lowest priority afforded our snow removal efforts are for the internal trail loops of the city's parks and as such they may not be plowed for a day or more based on the time requirements necessary to complete our higher priority efforts and the scope and magnitude of the storm event.

In collaboration with adjoining cities, Northglenn's Greenway Trail system connects to a metro-wide regional trail system that serves a variety of purposes, including leisure uses as well as bike and non-motorized transportation. Although the full function and use of these trails may diminish in the winter months, they still serve an important purpose and use and City staff make every effort to clear them within a reasonable time frame after a snow storm. All trails are intended to be cleared for pedestrian passage within 24 hours, but drifting or continuous snow flurries can make this an on-going and lengthy effort.

Please refer to the map that shows the trail and sidewalk system that is maintained by the City. The accompanying legend identifies each trail section's assigned priority for snow removal. Every effort is made to make all trail sections safe and passable in a timely manner after a storm event, however, prevailing weather conditions may make this a difficult task and patience with our snow removal efforts, both for streets and trails, is greatly appreciated. Citizens making use of any public sidewalk or trail are asked to be conscientious about the presence of ice since it is not possible to apply enough ice-melt products over the entire trail system to keep them completely clear.

The accompanying map can also be found on the city's web site (www.northglenn.org) along with other information on snow removal efforts and storm event notifications. Once at the web site, please click on the "Snow Biz" link under Current Happenings. From there, residents can find information on the City's snow removal priorities, citizen notification opportunities and other efforts to help our citizen's during times of and following winter storm events. Our off-road snow removal efforts can be found by clicking on the link titled "Snow Removal for City Sidewalks and Trails".

Please contact the department at 303-450-8720, should you have any questions regarding the City's trail and sidewalk snow removal efforts. As always, and consistent with the practices of other cities, we ask that you please contribute to overall snow removal efforts by keeping the sidewalk in front of your home clear and free from snow accumulation. Likewise, businesses are asked to do the same thing for patron safety and ease of access to and from the business. City ordinances govern these responsibilities and enforcement actions can be taken for non-compliance.

We thank you for your contributions and hope that, as the result of collective efforts, we will be able to provide safe passage for everyone making use of both public and private sidewalk and trail systems. Thank you, for your assistance.
