Search underway for new Northglenn city manager
Contributed by: City of Northglenn Public Communications on 6/30/2008

Steps are in place to find a replacement for A.J. Krieger, who resigned as Northglenn city manager on May 23.

Northglenn Mayor Kathie Novak addressed the situation at the start of the June 12 city council meeting:

"It is a difficult decision that the council has made, but I would ask that you all support the council as we try to do our jobs.

We can continue in the city to look backwards, point fingers and place blame. What I'm asking and what I believe this council is asking, is that we turn around together and face the challenges and opportunities in front of us head-on; that we deal with what we must and that we look to the future. We must all be committed to working together - the council, the staff and you - the citizens, to make Northglenn a great place to live and do business.

We may not always agree, but we must listen and respect each other, and as we go forward, we need your partnership, involvement, and support."

The city council has already taken action towards finding applicants. An advertisement will be published in the International City Manager Association publication on July 7 and applications will be received through Aug. 8, according to Councilman Gene Wieneke.

"There's no reason to have it linger," he said.

Mountain States Employers Council, a private sector group, will review the applications and give their recommendations to the committee in charge of hiring a new city manager. MSEC will also call references for prospective candidates.
Wieneke said consultants would not be used in the hiring process.

"We want a more hands-on learning process for each individual," he said.

He said the necessary qualifications are currently being hashed out.

Wieneke said council hopes to have at least three candidates come in for interviews in September, although the interview has not been established.
In the meantime, David Allen will continue to serve as acting city manager until a permanent replacement has been named.

"David has shown very good capability in working with people and showing his analytical side, and being quick on his feet," Wieneke said of Allen, who has temporarily moved from his job as public works and utilities director. "As far as keeping the boat going, he's doing an excellent job."
